in sickness and in health...I do

The coming of Cap and God calling our hearts is quite a beautiful story. In the midst of warfare, death, new beginnings, exhaustion, dreaming...He was whispering to us. He was preparing our hearts for different adventures, new desires, and a fresh faith. It is a long, yet short story, but that part of the story is not the objective of this posting. I guess this posting is like another love story. The kind of story you buy because the book cover and the quick thumbing of the pages is just-that-captivating. Once you start to read the book, you realize it is much more than the smart looking cover and good one-liners you read in the store. You are now investing your time and yourself to something much bigger than reading a few chapters a day.

Marriage is hard. It didn't take me long to realize that a God-centered marriage was going to be something you have to work on daily. The thing that really shocked me about marriage, is how the ugly in the deepest depths of you, you thought didn't exist, can come out. You always hear people say about their significant other, "Oh, he/she brings the best out of me". Well, true. Definitely true. I would also say he/she can bring the worst out in you. I know in the 4 1/2 years Bryce and I have been married I have said some things and done things that shocked me. I had no idea I had that stuff in me!

Over the last month, God has been really speaking to me through gardening. It started out in Colorado helping Joyce with her beds at the house. I love beautiful flowers and gardens and would be so happy with flower pots all over the place bursting with colors. Every spring I plant and organize flowers with where we are living. I get everything right where I want it according to how much sun each one needs, get it looking pretty, and then walk away and barely touch it. I forget about the daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance that has to happen if you want beautiful flowers and gardens. I pick the hundreds of weeds at the beginning of the season and get kind of upset a month later when they are everywhere once again! If you want something beautiful to grow, it takes some things for that to happen. Planting a seed is great, but it needs more than that. Bringing the plant home is great, but it doesn't stop there. For something beautiful to grow takes time, yourself, checking in, fertilizing, pruning, weeding, loving, watering, paying attention to the surroundings. Windy days dry out my hanging pots, which means I need to water them more when it is like that.

All of that brings me to my next thing. Marriage. Cap is like a new marriage. Actually, I can't think of the word right now, but he like one of those pre-determined marriages that you don't know each other yet kind of thing. Let me try to explain this a little.

When I started this marriage with Bryce just like when I started marriage out with God, it was a little awkward. We weren't always dancing to the same song or even the same dance. Sometimes I would accidentally step on his toe or try to lead when I should have been following. As the song continues it becomes more graceful. We flow back and forth calmly and smoothly. He can give me the look and I know I should twirl. Sometimes I break into a side crazy girl dance but he knows now how to keep the beat and bring me back in on the right count. There is a great dance going on and we are learning every day how to add new moves and steps and add a little more funk and spice to what we already know.

I guess with Cap, we have those amazing days where we dance and dance to different songs together, laugh and play, I set him on the toilet he goes, he looks across the room at me and giggles and smiles. Then we have those days where I have poop on my pants, the music is way too loud and static-y, Cap's not happy, I am exhausted, and our dance is not so pretty. You can be a good parent, and your kids will still cry. In fact, you are probably a good parent if your kids cry if that makes any sense.

Through several circumstances and events over the last couple of weeks (or since I started writing this on September 16) , I was given permission to let myself fall apart. It was okay to have some of the feelings I was having and let myself cry. I feel like I have great bits of wisdom for first time mommas out there, and may be just for mommas in general, but what I have learned this month has been ever so helpful to this new life as a mother. It has brought me back to the place dancing with my Father, right where I need to be. We must spend time together on the dance floor so that we can move ever so gracefully to the rhythm of new tunes that will inevitably come our way. I want to look at new music and instruments with great expectation not fear. I know in the arms of God, with His hand firmly on my back, this dance will be beautiful and one that does not want to be missed.

I have fun pictures coming later on and big stuff going on in the Ball household to share later also.

Colorado Take Two

While in Colorado Bryce and I took off on a short day hike. Cap stayed with his Papa and Grammi so we could go out kid free! We had a great time in the dry sunny weather dreaming of the west once again. This was the first time Cap got fed by someone other than us. He did great. Once he decided he would drink my milk from a bottle at 5 months old, he will take it whenever it is offered. That has been great! Even though we don't do it very often, it is nice to have the option. Here are some pics of the hike. It of course was beautiful. Don't forget to scroll down and see other post. I have done 3 over this last week and have another one coming soon! Enjoy!

Colorado Take One

Here is part one of the pictures I am posting on our trip out to Colorado. I am usually not one to be sad about leaving and going back home. I always have fun on vacation and outing, but I also always love being home. This time was a little different. I enjoyed so much being with family and spending time together not working, cleaning, cooking, or doing school. It was nice to be a wife, mom, and daughter-in-law without all the extras:) Multi-tasking is great and all and I am really good at it, but sometimes I just don't want to do it:) So needless to say, I did not want to come home and could have stayed much longer! We had a wonderful time with family!

Steve and Karen came to visit us in the Springs!
So so very good to see them. We miss you guys so much!!!

funny face, almost like he ate one of Papa's limes
on our way to crested butte, incredibly scenic driving
so we kind of let Cap suck his way through a cherry.
i guess technically this might have been his first food,
though i am not really counting it
hot tubbing at our lodge,
i miss you kaci!
Grammi, Bryce and Cap on our short
hike taking a break from driving
great backdrop!

6 months

Cap turned 6 months this past Tuesday. Here are some things we want to remember.

- he can roll all over the place, but he has to be in the mood
- in fact, he kind of likes to conquer something, then just move on and not be that into it (reminds me of someone :))
- super aware of what is going on...the smallest sounds or movements catch his attention
- beautiful blue eyes still
- 18 1/2 pounds, 65 percentile
- 17.5 inch head. 75 percentile
- 27.5 inches long, 85 percentile
- had his first non-tata food this week, avocado...he loved it. we have been trying rice cereal for 2 days now and he does not love it. his face looks like mine does when there is a lump in my mashed potatoes. there may be no hope for this stuff, but i can't blame him. it doesn't even look good especially compared to avocado! any tricks from the moms out there???
- is pretty over taking naps most days :( he is more into cap-naps...20-30minute things here and there, but he does occasionally take an hour or two morning nap
- sleeps great at night and has been sleeping till almost 8 or so these past few mornings
- puts everything in his mouth as usual
- no signs of teeth
- started to make more real talking sounds, loves to say bahbahbahbah which is so cute with his little toothless gummy mouth of his
- redish hair with a great olive skin tone
- prefers standing to sitting
- still independent, but has these days where he wants to hang on us all day and not be put down
- great traveler and gets lots of compliments on how well he does on the planes
- loves to play in water
- loves to go on walks or sit on the front porch
- will watch the wind blow in the trees or how it makes the fern spin in circles on our porch
- drinks my milk in a bottle like a champ finally!!! now we can go on dates!!!!
- aware now when we aren't the ones holding him and when we leave a room and does not like it sometimes
- crazy about his dad! watches him like crazy!
- loves to look at books...well not look at them, but go up and down the pages with his hands feeling the entire page! and of course, trying to eat them also
- started to wave this wednesday. he does it backwards. very cute!
- adorable laugh
- was left with strangers this week for the first time while i went to a woman's bible study
- speaks with his entire body
- distracted eater 3/4s of the time
- plays with my hair when he is eating
- has considerably more hair than last month, it just got thicker or coarser or something?!

I could probably write a lot more! It has been great month with him and he of course is growing everyday. I have more to say about the month but that will be for another post. Enjoy!

this one is funny. it looks like he is smoking a huge pipe!
carhart covers from the Brooks family

he was in such a good mood this evening when we took these!
he was laughing so much and so hard!

Bedtime Help

We are way over due for some serious updates. Thank you LaJuan for checking everyday and then emailing me to make sure we are still here!! Camp has been over for a month now and we have had lots going on since then including a vacation out to Colorado to see Bryce's parents!! This is not going to be my update because time is not going to allow that right now, but this will be a little teaser instead.

We always put Cap down for the night when he is drowsy not asleep. Sometimes he plays and talks and then falls asleep. Other times he tosses a few times, sinks his head into his blanket, throws his arms above his head, then is out. We share a room right now with him. It is a huge room so he has one side and we occupy the other. One night, we put him in bed and we were on our bed talking. We hear Cap making all sorts of noise and throwing his body around the crib. After a few minutes I look up to see this:

We were cracking up! He was stuck but still laughing and playing and enjoying his pre-sleep self. Thought you might enjoy these. Cap turned 6 months yesterday. We go for our check up this afternoon. I am also going for the first time to a woman's bible study. We are looking at the lives of Elisha and Elijah (who I love!). I will post again soon!!!! I have many more pics to share!

listening

i hear and say so many words

yet yours is the word i need

speak now,

and help me to listen

and,

if what i hear is silence,

let it quiet me

let is disturb me

let it touch my need

let it break my pride

let it shrink my certainties

let it enlarge my wonder

5 Months

Summer camp officially ended last night. We still have a lot of great things going on in the off season. We get all kinds of groups renting our facilities out, using our waterfront, climbing wall, etc. So it doesn't actually slow down until mid-to-late-October. Our scheduling definitely changes though. Bryce starts school this coming Wednesday. We can take a day off here and there which is fantastic! No more free meals and dishes done for us. I have enjoyed and appreciated that more than ever this summer. Oh, and all of Cap's friends are gone!!!! He hasn't figured it out yet, but I think sometime next week when he realizes he has only seen my face and Bryce's face, he will get a little sad...or a lot sad. Not sure. Well, today Cap is 5 months old. Last year at this time, I was hearing his heart beat for the first time in my belly. Life is amazing. Here is what the little guy is up to these days.

- sitting up really good on his own
- constantly trying to do a sit up so he doesn't have to lay down
- has slept past 7 a handful of days recently
- does not like taking naps, we don't really force it and I am hoping it changes now that summer is over
- can copy noises or sticking his tongue out
- got his first sunburn, and peeled a little....I felt terrible!
- loves the lake and slashing
- love his sippy cup and is no longer shocked when water comes out, but barely drinks anything out of it
- sucks his toes
- rolls a lot more when he is in the mood
- blue eyes still
- birthmark on the right side of his chest showed up, a brown continent of some sort
- he is crazy about his dad, and me:)
- still has the best belly laugh and cutest smiles
- moved to the size medium on our cloth prefolds
- wears mostly 9-12 month clothes, 12 month fits best

I am off to get a few things done while he is sleeping! Oh, and he is going to have a new cousin come February!!! Congratulations to my brother Jeromy and sister(in-law) Britt!! Can't wait to meet him or her!

spesh

a boy on the move!
